About Me

Early Intervention Educational Therapist in Los Angeles, CA

Supporting children with warmth, science, and fun.

Hi there! My name is Leah Kohan, and I am an educational therapist practicing in the West LA and Beverly Hills areas.

I am a Southern California native, born and raised in Santa Monica, CA. After receiving my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from UCLA, I immediately pursued my childhood dream of becoming a teacher. I eagerly obtained my Master of Arts in Educational Therapy from California State University, Northridge. Working one-on-one with students is a privilege I truly treasure. In addition to Associate-level membership in the Association of Educational Therapists, I continue to expand my knowledge of research-based teaching practices through seminars and additional training, such as the Orton-Gillingham approach. I have experience evaluating and remediating a variety of learning differences, such as Dyslexia, ADHD, language processing, and executive functioning disorders. My passion is working with preschool and elementary-aged students as they build literacy skills and develop a love of reading.

As an educational therapist, my mission is to help all students reach their full potential by providing quality instruction in a warm, engaging, and supportive environment where students will feel safe sharing their ideas and making mistakes as they tackle challenging content. I believe in viewing each child as a unique individual with their own set of strengths and needs, and that all children can succeed if they have the proper support and understanding.

Educational Therapist vs. Tutor

Discover if educational therapy is right for your child.

1

Training

Educational Therapists are specially trained to support students with learning disabilities and learning differences, as well as the social-emotional challenges that can interfere with learning. As the name suggests, Educational Therapy extends beyond academic instruction to include therapeutic support. In many cases, addressing issues such as low self-esteem is essential for meaningful and lasting academic progress.

2

Assessment

Educational Therapists are trained to administer assessments that provide insight into a student’s learning profile and inform psychoeducational goals, resulting in an individualized treatment plan.

3

Focus

While a tutor usually helps with a specific subject, an Educational Therapist looks at the whole learner. Focusing only on academics can miss important underlying skills, such as attention, organization, memory, and processing skills. Ed Therapists work not just to improve academic performance, but also to strengthen these core learning skills and build self-awareness and confidence, helping students become more independent and successful learners over time.
